Howz my ducks? It's autumn again! And the beginning of a Happy Story

I just looked out the kitchen window a few minutes ago and saw Bossy and Nipper swimming around and up-ending in the pond.  It's freezing this morning and I thought to myself, "how do they do that?"  But they seem quite happy floating around doing their morning routine as usual.

It's just started to get cold on our part of the earth.  The summer was long, hot and dry!  Now it's autumn and the feeling in the air has made the change, finally.

This is my first year of being a duck owner and carer.  All this with ducks started last September for me.  I was about to come in from the garden late one afternoon and I heard a loud cheeping sound.  When I looked out to see where it was coming from I saw this little figure scooting across the grass on the other side of the road.  "That looked like a duckling" I said to myself, and went out to take a closer look.  It sure was a tiny little duckling all by itself crying and running in under some trees that were hanging down low to the ground.  I bent down to get a closer look and in a flash the little guy scooted right past me and took off, still crying, to the next front yard and hid under some more bushes.  Well I followed and he had nowhere else to go so I reached in and gently got him in my hand and snuggled him into my chest.  All the while he was cheeping and beeping and crying for his lost family.

I had been thinking about getting some ducks for quite a while.  I had an incling that me and ducks would do great together and they would do good work for me around the yard and I would look after them really well and give them a happy safe place to live.  So, now that I had found this little guy I straight away started thinking that this might be the beginning of my duck family.  All I had to do now was take him inside and let my wife in on my "plans."  You see, Val had never been too keen on the idea of ducks as pets, coz they're so "messy and smelly and noisy."

Well, I entered the kitchen area with my new found friend well hidden in my hands and went up to Val and our son Matt was visiting as well.  When I showed them my little treasure I just found their reaction was suitably one of "what the?"  If you have ever watched an episode of Rove on Australian TV you know about those "what the?" moments!

So, you see that was the very beginning of my duck family.  Of course, once Val saw this cutest little iddy biddiest duckling in my nice kind warm soft hands she started to go all gooey and so I quickly saw my opportunity to milk the moment.  Yes, this was finally my very real oportunity to convince her that having ducks would actually be really fun and not a noisy, smelly, messy experience at all!

Well, the very next morning we sat at the table and guess who was doing the hand feeding?  Yes, Val was in luuve, and I was in luck and about to get my duck family started!

This is some video I took on that first morning of looking after our little rescued duckling, who I would later give the name "Happy"

howz my ducks? it' raining!

I've just been hearing the lovely sound of rain on the veranda roof.  It's been a while, in fact this has been one of the longest, dryest, hottest summers we have had!

I was a bit concerned how the splash ducks were doing out there in the yard so I just checked on them.  As I went out and walked up to the gate, Nipper, Tiny and Bossy were happily woddling along in their usuall  line formation chattering away to each other and giving me a slight tilt of the head and a brief look as they passed by on their way to the pond.  Yes, in the middle of the rain, woddling along happily and off for a midnight splash.  So, I guess they're just fine.

Noisy is still over in the far corner on her eggs so she missed out on midnight splashing.  I made a cover over the area she had chosen to make her nest so she is nicely sheltered from the weather.  She's got nice dry meadow hay all around her as well and plenty of protection from the wind.  The spot she chose is one of the most sheltered places in the yard, and the coolest place to be when it's hot.

I spent some time out there with them late in the afternoon, just hanging out, me and my ducks.  There were lots of little birds too.  Lately the New Holland Honey Eaters have been hanging out around the duck yard too.  I don't remember them being around so much like they are at present.  Usually it's the little Silver Eyes that have the greatest presense, they've been around too but the Honey Eaters with their nice yellow stripes have been flitting around as well.  I've noticed that there are lots of tiny flying insects above the yard and the Honey Eaters will perch on the branches of the mulberry tree and then dart off and make a clicking sound and then return to another branch and make exited singing sounds and then repeat over and over the same routine.  The clicking sound must be their little beaks snapping and catching the insects in mid air.  Maybe the exited singing is a victory song celibrating a successful hunting expedition!  This routine has been happening every evening just before it starts to get dark.  They certainly do good work keeping the insect life in balance!

Howz my ducks thismorning?

Well, it's a quiet Saturday morning on our part of the earth and the sun is shining.

I can't hear any duck activity whatsoever.  This is about the time of the day when they all decide it's time for a sleep.

Noisy is still on her nest and the others are over in their favorite corner under the shade of the grevillea trees.  They each have their own favorite spot where they will often go and nestle down with their beaks snuggled in under the feathers of one of their wings.  I don't know how they can turn their neck around like that, it actually looks a bit uncomfortable sometimes to me, but they seem quite happy in that position.

If I go over their while they're sleeping Nipper will usually lift his head up and call out to warn me with a set of loudish single raspy growling sounds, like growling drake talk.  If he's really serious his feathers on top of his head start to rise up each time he growls.  Meanwhile the girls just stay still with their beeks snuggled under their wings but they keep their eyes open and they're little eyes are the only part of them that moves.  They look up and over to where I am as if to say " don't come near to us!  We're sleeping!  This is our rest-time and we don't want to be disturbed thank-you".  And Nipper chimes in with another set of growling raspish words of warning, just to make sure I understand.  Then, when he's satisfied that I'm going to mind my place he immediately wiggles his beak back in under one of his wings and just his eyes will be turned upward looking at me as a final statement.

Then, as long as I keep my distance and stay still they all let their eyes get heavy again, slowly closing them and going back to their restful sleepy morning routine.  That's about when I move away quietly and come in and get myself a cup of tea.

Noisy was up again early thismorning for just a short while, splashing and chattering loudly in the pond and after filling her tummy went back to her nest.  She's got an amazing amount of eggs in there but I'm not sure how well Nipper has been doing his work so we have to wait and see.  She's been on the nest day and night now for just over two weeks.

Noisy Splashing Ducks: Hows My Ducks Doin

Noisy Splashing Ducks: Hows My Ducks Doin: "Well, Noisy is doing so well sitting on her eggs. She has gone all mothery and I think she loves the idea of being a mother duck to babies...."

Hows My Ducks Doin

Well, Noisy is doing so well sitting on her eggs.  She has gone all mothery and I think she loves the idea of being a mother duck to babies.  I can't wait to see precious little ducklings emerge from her beautiful eggs she has made.

It has been about two weeks now since she started staying on the nest all day and night, apart from maybe an hour at most here and there to go do some foreging, some wing flapping and swimming and ducking and diving in her special pond I made for her and Tiny, Nipper and Bossy.

It's now just getting light on the morning of 21 April 2011 and I just heard Tiny calling out very loudly from the duck yard.  She tends to be very noisy very early in the morning just as the first light of dawn breaks through the dark of the night-time.  Tiny was always the most shy of the trio of sibblings that I added to our family earlier this year.  She has always been the smallest and cutest of the three and has a delightful personality starting to shine through now.  She is getting more tame too.  She used to be the one to move away from me but now shes starting to come up to me more and lets me give her a little tickle under her beak and on her chest.  Now I can hear the local crows doing their morning calling out.  When I first came to Australia from New Zealand in 1981 we used to say that the crows sounded like sheep up in the trees!

My Noisy Splashing Ducks

Well, I love ducks.  Welcome to my Google Blogger Site where you can read all about my noisy splashing ducking diving sometimes dirty but always fun and mostly happy ducks.

They are called:  Noisy, Nipper, Bossy and Tiny.

This is Noisy.  She is the second duck that I raised from
about one week old.  I got her from a rural show last
October 2010.  She has always been very noisy.
Today I spent some time just hanging out with them as I often do.  It was a beautiful sunny day and I had just put some fresh medow hay all around on the ground in their yard.  I laid down for a while on the clean straw in the sun and simply enjoyed being with my babies.  They came up and hung around nibbling my feet and whatever other part of my skin or clothing they could get hold of.  Tiny has a really sharp little beak and she likes to focus on just one part of my skin and see how much pain she can inflict by pinching me until I say "Tiny, that hurts you know, do you mind?"  She doesn't mind at all and just goes and finds another easy target and starts the whole process all over.  But it's ok, it doesn't hurt that much, I just exaggerate to make her think she's hurting me.  She likes to think she has the upper hand!

Bossy has been a bit funny with me lately.  I had to tell her off a couple of weeks ago and pick her up and get her out of an area she got into that she wasn't allowed to be in.  It was actually Noisy who was the instigator of that naughtiness and she got into trouble too and had to be picked up and moved.  Bossy really wasn't happy with me though and she's been staying away from me and giving me looks!   I hope she gets over it soon because I'm actually starting to feel a bit rejected.  Today, while I was laying down with them in the sun she ended up coming over and having a nibble on my feet.  I didn't realize at first that she had come closer and when I finally noticed I was delighted .  She has always been the most friendly and forthcoming of the family and today was shades of that friendly Bossy coming back.  I must take some peas out to her, that's sure to win her over if I persevere.  Apparently ducks don't like being picked up or approached from above, which is what I had to do to get her out of that area she was in.  You can loose their trust for a while and it just takes a bit of time and bribery with their favorite treats to win them over again.  I've been trying to get down low to the ground in front of her to help her to feel  trustful again.

Well that's a bit about my day with my ducks today and a preview of what my blog is about.  I hope to enthuse you to become interested in and maybe even try having ducks for pets.  They are fun creatures that always make you smile and laugh every day.  However they do require particular attention and care because they can be messy.  Personally they are very clean but they need regular help to keep their environment and habitat clean and healthy.  But it is very rewarding organic work!

Here is Noisy again and yes, she is being noisy.
She is also a very clever duck!
She is currently sitting on about 15 of so wonderfully
created eggs and for the last 9 or 10 days she has been
staying on the nest or clutch of eggs for all but an hour or two
of every hour of the day and night.  Apparently it takes up to
28 to 30 days for the eggs to hatch.  That is going to be so
exciting.  Ducklings are wonderfull to have around.  they definately
make you smile and laugh and sometimes cry.  Laughing and
crying is good for us!  Very good!
I believe in duckling therapy for stress and anxiety relief.
